Blame the gun

Somehow in today's modern society it is easy to blame the gun. Why is it that such knowledge and logic as this below has been lost?
Quemadmoeum gladis nemeinum occidit, occidentis telum est ("A sword is never a killer, it's a tool in the killer's hands") - Lucius Annaeus Seneca "the younger" ca. (4 BC - 65 AD)
Even then they knew it was the person who was the killer, not the tool. So does that mean anti-gun logic is pre-Christian era?
